Gaita Memorial Home has been a family owned and operated funeral home since its foundation in 1961 by Alfonse Gaita and his wife, the former Donna Stokes. Previously, it had been a well - known tavern on the Newark to Pompton Turnpike, called Gus and Gerts'. Many different social organizations held its meetings on that site. Alfonse operated the funeral home until his untimely death in 1963, at which time Donna became a funeral director and managed the funeral home until 1973. A graduate of American Academy Mc Allister Institute of Mortuary Science, NYC, Carmen Gaita (Al's nephew) and his wife, the former Linda Pizzi, purchased the funeral home and continue to operate it to this day. Carmen and Linda have been active in the Little Falls community and raised two children, both of whom were educated in the Little Falls Public School system before graduating from college. Carmen was the mayor of Little Falls twice and served as the police commissioner for five years and the public works commissioner for two years. He didn't seek re-election but was appointed to the Little Falls Township Board of Adjustment and Planning Board and is still a member . He has served as the Little Falls Senior Citizen Coordinator and has received awards from the Little Falls Jaycees as "Outstanding Citizen" and the Little Falls Athletic Program. He is currently a member of Passaic Valley UNICO, where he serves on the Executive Board, Knights of Columbus, Little Falls Business Association. Professionally, he belongs to the National Funeral Directors Association, New Jersey Funeral Directors Association, Passaic County Funeral Directors Association, Choices - NJ, Pre-Planning Trust Fund, Essex County Memorial Society. |
